Bioparco di Roma is the city’s zoo, tucked inside Villa Borghese and open since 1911. About 1,200 animals from around 150 species live here, from Sumatran tigers and Asian elephants to Cape penguins and Komodo dragons. It makes an easy half-day out for families and a green break between Rome’s museums.

About Bioparco di Roma

Bioparco di Roma opened on 5 January 1911. Its first layout was designed by Carl Hagenbeck, who replaced cages with moats so visitors could watch the animals without bars in the way.

In the 1930s, architect Raffaele De Vico expanded the grounds to their current 17 hectares and added the Reptile House and the Grande Voliera, a huge geodesic aviary. In 1998 the zoo became the Bioparco, shifting its focus to conservation, education and research.

The Great Ape Area

Chimpanzees live in their own Chimpanzee Village, and orangutans have a separate area. Smaller primates are here too, including ring-tailed lemurs and tamarins, some of the smallest monkeys in the world.

Big Cats

Three big cats live at Bioparco: Sumatran tigers, Asiatic lions and the Caucasian leopard. Their areas close 30 to 60 minutes before the park does, so put them early on your route.

Reptile House

The Rettilario dates from the 1930s and recreates a tropical forest, with waterfalls and trees around the enclosures. The park also has separate exhibits for a green anaconda and Komodo dragons.

Asian Elephants

Asian elephants are among the largest residents at Bioparco. If big animals are your thing, the Giraffe House and the white rhino area are worth a stop as well.

Sea Lions and Penguins

California sea lions and Cape penguins each have their own area. They're good stops for younger visitors who need a break from walking.
