Catacombs of Rome: The Full Story

The Catacombs of Domitilla began around 120 AD on land owned by Flavia Domitilla, and they are the largest and oldest underground cemetery in Rome. At their heart is a semi-underground basilica, the only one in the city, dedicated to the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus and to Saint Petronilla.

Saints Marcellinus and Peter lies at the third mile of the ancient Via Labicana, a place once called ad duas lauros. Its galleries hold 88 painted rooms, among them the Arcosolium of Orpheus and scenes of funeral banquets. The Mausoleum of Saint Helena stands on the same site.

Domitilla is open every day except Tuesday, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Saints Marcellinus and Peter is closed on Thursdays and runs tours at set times that change with the season. Both schedules are on the opening hours page.

What to expect underground
