Things to Know Before Visiting the Catacombs of Rome
Entry to both the Catacombs of Domitilla and the Catacombs of Saints Marcellinus and Peter is permitted only with a guided tour at fixed time slots.
Visitor numbers per group are restricted, so booking tickets in advance is strongly recommended, especially during peak seasons.
Late mornings and weekends tend to be the busiest; visiting early in the morning or mid-afternoon is usually quieter.
The catacombs maintain a constant temperature of around 15-17°C, so carrying a light jacket is advisable even in summer.
Due to narrow passages, uneven surfaces, and stairs, the catacombs are not wheelchair accessible and may be difficult for visitors with mobility issues.
The dark, enclosed spaces may be uncomfortable for small children; some tours may have age recommendations.
