About Galleria Borghese

Galleria Borghese occupies the villa that Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V, built in the early 1600s to house his art collection. Work began in 1607 under the architect Flaminio Ponzio and was finished by Giovanni Vasanzio.

Inside are Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, including sculptures by Bernini and paintings by Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian, displayed in the villa's frescoed rooms.

Titian and Raphael hang in the picture gallery upstairs. On the ground floor, Antonio Canova's Venus Victrix, a reclining portrait of Napoleon's sister Pauline Bonaparte, was finished in 1808 and has had its own room since 1889.

The villa's ceilings were frescoed in the 1770s by a team of painters that included Mariano Rossi. Outside, Villa Borghese park has fountains, sculpture-lined paths and wide lawns. You don't need a gallery ticket to walk the gardens, and the golf cart tour covers far more ground than you would on foot.

Galleria Borghese Opening Hours

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with last entry at 5:45 p.m. Closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January. The Opening Hours page lists every entry slot and the quieter times to go.
