Ostia began as a fortified Roman colony around the 4th century BC. It grew into Rome's main port, handling the grain and goods that fed the capital, and stayed busy until the harbor silted up and trade moved elsewhere.

Around 34 hectares have been excavated so far. The digs have revealed the forum, temples, bath complexes, warehouses and multi-storey homes, many of them with their mosaics still in place.
