The Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica are split between two palaces: Palazzo Barberini on Via delle Quattro Fontane, and Galleria Corsini in Trastevere. The self-guided ticket gets you timed entry at Barberini and also covers Corsini for 20 days. The two guided tours stay at Barberini, with a live guide taking you through the rooms.

A Baroque palace built around a villa

Maffeo Barberini became Pope Urban VIII in 1623. Two years later he bought a Sforza villa on the Quirinal Hill, and Carlo Maderno was asked to build the family palace around it instead of knocking it down. The result is an H-shaped plan, with the old Sforza wing facing Piazza Barberini.

Bernini took over in 1629. He is most likely behind the loggia above the entrance and the square staircase. The oval spiral stair on the other side is probably by Borromini.

Today the palace holds Italian and European painting, with Raphael, Caravaggio, and Guido Reni among the best-known names.

The palace itself

The great hall at the centre of the palace has Pietro da Cortona's enormous ceiling fresco. Look up for a while.

On the top floor is a Rococo apartment fitted out in the mid-1700s for Cornelia Costanza, the last Barberini heir. Her descendants were still living there in 1955.
